In 'A Double Barreled Detective Story', Mark Twain's satirical take on the mystery novel genre, Sherlock Holmes finds himself in the American west solving two arcs of revenge. In the first arc, a young woman's abused and abandoned by her ne'er-do-well husband, Jacob Fuller, who she married against her father's wishes. After bearing a son with an incredible sense of smell, she sends him to destroy his biological father's peace and reputation. In the second arc, Holmes applies "scientific methods" to solve the murder of a silver miner, but a supernatural ability reveals the true culprit. Twain even breaks the fourth wall, appearing as himself to poke fun at his other short stories.
