Evolution theory apologist and scholar Samuel Butler is the author of "Evolution, Old & New…" Butler though an avowed evolutionist himself, takes a different view from that of Charles Darwin on natural selection, arguing instead that Darwin's view of "the survival of the fittest" does not reconcile with the clear demonstration of design of some form, which he cites various examples of, as having taken place in the evolutionary process. The book also contrasts the different views on evolution as Buffon, Erasmus Darwin and Jean Baptiste Lamarck.
